What is rectal bleeding?

Rectal bleeding is a common symptom I regularly see in my practice. It refers to blood during or after bowel movements and may appear as:

  • Bright red blood on toilet paper
  • Blood on stool surface
  • Dark stool in some cases

However, appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.

Does rectal bleeding mean colon cancer?

The answer is: usually no. In most cases I encounter, the cause is benign such as:

  • Hemorrhoids
  • Anal fissures
  • Chronic constipation

However, in a small percentage, it may be associated with colon or rectal cancer, especially when other symptoms are present. Therefore, rectal bleeding is a symptom that requires evaluation, not a diagnosis itself.

Common causes

Hemorrhoids

  • Bright red bleeding
  • Itching or discomfort
  • Bleeding after defecation

Anal fissures

  • Severe pain during bowel movements
  • Mild bleeding
  • Burning sensation

Constipation

  • Straining and minor injury to anal tissues

Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood in stool

When should you worry?

Seek medical attention if bleeding is:

  • Persistent or recurrent
  • Associated with abdominal pain
  • Linked to weight loss
  • Accompanied by fatigue or anemia
  • Associated with changes in bowel habits

Could it be colon cancer?

Yes, but not commonly. Warning signs include:

  • Persistent bowel habit changes
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Narrow stools
  • Dark or mixed blood in stool

Diagnosis

In my clinic, evaluation includes:

  • Clinical examination
  • Blood tests
  • Stool analysis
  • Colonoscopy when necessary

Colonoscopy remains the most accurate diagnostic tool.

My advice to patients

Do not ignore symptoms, but do not assume the worst.

Most cases are simple and treatable when diagnosed early, and timely evaluation ensures proper care and peace of mind.

When to visit the clinic?

I recommend visiting if:

  • Bleeding persists for several days
  • Symptoms recur frequently
  • Pain or other symptoms are present
  • Or if there is any concern about the cause

Early evaluation helps ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
